Symptoms

How does highlighting and click through tracking work for InQuira 8.0+?
Highlighting does not work because of javascript links, or because of a server challenge prompt.

The simple steps for highlighting does the following:
User clicks link
Server pulls the target document
Server finds literal strings from excerpt
Server rewrites target document, inserting:
A base href tag
Style tags for highlight colors
Inserts link to specific document section
Server presents rewritten document to user.

Occasionally you may find that after clicking through on search results, the highlighting span is inserted in the middle of words, or it appears on words unrelated to the search. This is influenced by the fuzzyMatchCharCount attribute in #.xml config file. The default value of this entry is 5, so all the sentences which are similar to the exact answer within 5 characters are highlighted. You can force an exact match by changing this value to zero.

PDF search results don't highlight every occurrence of the search terms. If the match is based on the title, then only the title match counts; no highlighting occurs for the term in the body of the PDF, because PDF titles are part of document properties or outlines: the title is not visible if you simply view the document.

PDF highlighting does not highlight every word that matches in a document; it only highlights the sentence that was considered the "best answer". Finding the "best answer" is what makes our system different, and the algorithm is controlled by the Search Components generated by the rules. This includes using terms from the "title" of the document, which in the case of a PDF is extracted from data that is not necessarily visible in the PDF document (e.g. from the document outline or meta data). If the answer is a "section answer" then you will see several sentences in a section highlighted. A careful detailed analysis of the results in Test Drive can show you which SC contributed to making this the best answer.
