A purpose is often referred to as a portlet.  A purpose is a context in which to run a set of rules that will bring back an answer set.  There are several purposes shipped with the product oob.  The main one being the answer purpose that drives the search.  Glossary, contact, are a couple others that are commonly used.  Many times the reference to a purpose and a porlet are the same.  However there is the search back-end purpose function and the front end portlet function.

In order to make a purpose return search results there are three things needed.

1. Have a purpose defined in the search system manager config.
2. Have an enabled launch search rule in the dictionary that has the purpose selected.
3. Have enabled search components for the purpose.

This will cause the purpose to run and return a set of results in the search runtime when the launch document search rule is triggered.

Something on the front end app needs to read this information and display it for the user.  Some of these are built into infocenter like the glossary purpose displays in the infocenter glossary portlet.
