The Oracle Knowledge Install guide will set up the product as a single server installation.   This can be modified to suit the needs of the customer.   The install doc is here
pg 86 Single Server Installation  The standard installation process using the packaged installer installs and configures all Information Manager components on a single server. The standard process requires an existing Oracle Knowledge Intelligent Search instance on the target server. The stand-alone installation installs all of the necessary components to run Information Manager without requiring a previously installed installation of Oracle Knowledge Intelligent Search.
In a single server environment, the Information Manager Content Resource Store is created on the local file system, as follows:
If you are on WebLogic, the default location is:
<Oracle_Knowledge_home>/instances/<instance_name>/webapps/<OKResource App Name>/app/resources
<OKResource App Name> is OKResources by default and can be configured during the installation process.
This folder is served by the Oracle Knowledge Resources Web application.
In a single server environment, the Web application serves images and accesses the Information Manager application.

This note is also in the install guide
Note: Be sure that the specified context name is a unique deployment name in your domain to avoid duplicate deployment errors.

All instances need to access a single point for this data.  For performance reasons you may need to serve this from somewhere else.  These are installed in a separate application so that they can be easily be moved for performance reasons.  With only a single instance OOB they are deployed under OKResources which is in the same managed server.
There the /resources and /library and /thumbnails directory is transparent since it is the same managed server.
When there are many IMs and ICs the place that the attachments, images and thumbnails are loaded from can be moved for performance reasons.

Other setups are also possible. But Oracle support does not make recommendations or assist in debugging these configurations.
