If the bulk update has more records than the threshholds, it will be executed as part of a bulk update job.  There are a couple known issues with these jobs.

In 8.5 if a job hangs, the job can simply be canceled.  There is a very low level synchronization bug that is causing very occasional hangs of the bulk update job itself.  Their is a bug to change this behavior and fail the job.  If the job fails it can be resubmitted as the job was orginally submitted.  You can get the details from the job by exporting them to an excel file by clicking on the date of the job in the bulk update job list.  There is no function to rerun a bulk update job.  By canceling the job other jobs can proceed to run.

Prior to 8.5

Why the IM Console hung/non-responding with continuous Full GC and then crash when performing bulk update?
