There are certain update statements in the upgrade scripts provided by Oracle that consume a lot of time due to the huge number of records in the target database tables. Could you suggest efficient ways to tune these?

For example: in ach_pay_type.sql script there are several update statements like UPDATE payinfo_t SET ach=0; or UPDATE au_payinfo_t SET ach=0. These statements are time consuming as there are around 20 million records in each of these tables. We would like to tune this to improve performance.
