After Accepting an ICS Invitation From External User, Event Cannot Be Modified

A Calendar Server 6.3 calendar user, using Thunderbird and Lightning, receives an email. The email comes from an external calendar system (e.g. Microsoft Exchange Server 2007), and contains an ics event invitation .
The user can accept the invitation, but afterwards, modifications from the organizer are not accepted.
Running cscomponents shows the event in the calendar database:
e.g. mail invitation sent from email@example.com to firstname.lastname@example.org:

It shows the external user's email address, but also shows the local user as the organizer.
