Supplier Portal Throws Error Message: 'The email format is not correct.' (Doc ID 1667189.1)

Goal

What could cause the issue that a user cannot enter his email address as expected into the supplier portal?
He gets the following error message:
Error: The email format is not correct.

However, the email address looks correct: RDEMU@fr.agile.com.
