ASAP Cannot Connect to Web Service Through HTTPS (Doc ID 1684974.1)

Symptoms

When I am connecting web service secure interface (HTTPS) from a cartridge in ASAP, I receive the following error in the JNEP diagnostic file:
com.sun.xml.internal.messaging.saaj.SOAPExceptionImpl: Message send failed
com.sun.xml.internal.messaging.saaj.client.p2p.HttpSOAPConnection.call(HttpSOAPConnection.java:148)
com.mslv.activation.cartridge.aaa.fib.x1.AAAConnectionHandler.sendRequest(AAAConnectionHandler.java:122)

In the ASAP.console, I see the following error:

Caused by: javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target
