In the CSC when searching for orders using wildcards we see this error pop up:

This worked in Oracle ATG Web Commerce CSC 10.x and also works in Oracle Commerce 11.x in our test environment.

In Oracle ATG Web Commerce CSC 10.x search was conducted using ATG Search. In Oracle Commerce 11.x ATG Search has been completely removed and in CSC it was replaced by full text search (FTS).
You can read more about this in the "What's New in Oracle Commerce 11" document attached to the knowledge article
Note 1620280.1 - Oracle Commerce Version 11 What's New Reference
Specifically read the section "ATG Search Replaced with Database-Optimized Search for Orders and Profiles"
In version 10 the same problem could have happened, but it was prevented by an ATG Search setting called maxFilter which is described in the knowledge article
Note 1391383.1 - CSC Order or Profile Search Returns No Results or Fewer Results Than Expected
This prevented the error but be aware that not all of the actual matches were being returned.

The reason this works in the version 11 test environment is because there are very few orders there, while in the production environment there are hundreds of thousands of orders that match the wildcard.
