Symptoms

When attempting to create a new backup file for a SQL Server Express database, the following error occurs:

ERROR
-----------------------
Backup failed for Server '<servername\Primavera>'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
Additional Information:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The media loaded on "<path\filename.bak>" is formatted to support 2 media families, but 3 media families are expected according to the backup device specification. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)


STEPS
-----------------------
The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:

  1. Right click on Database, choose Tasks-> Backup Database.
  2. Back up to Disk, Add and Browse to location, create filename, and click OK.
  3. Observe error on execute.

Due to this issue, users cannot backup the database to a new file .bak.
