Very Slow IMAP with iPhone and Backend Mail Store on Messaging 8.x

iPhone with standard mail app cannot fetch email via IMAP proxy (AService) / MMP.
When users try to synchronize their iPhone with the Messaging store, the iPhone takes more than a minute (or two) for finding a new mail in the mailbox and 2 minutes more for downloading it.
We recently migrated one of our mail stores from Messaging 7u4-24 to MS 8.0.1.
