Symptoms

Incremental indexing of profiles or orders stopped working after configuration changes were made to the /atg/userprofiling/search/ProfileIndexedItemsGroup component. 

It was observed that changes were being queued into the srch_update_queue table, but profile changes were not making it to the search engines. Debugging showed that indexing commands were being sent to the search engines but they were instructions to DELETE content and never to INSERT content.
