Oracle does not recommend running server pool using mixed versions of IM as there might be protocol changes between server to server communication. Secondly, we do not certify a mixed environment that may lead to inconsistency of server states and functional behavior. Since IM 10 cannot work with an older IM server version (i.e. IM 9) in pool set up, it is necessary to upgrade all the servers to the same version at once, however, this will result in a complete outage of the IM environment and services.
