How do you set a 'numeric' dimension data type in an Endeca application that uses CAS for data ingest instead of Forge?

Previously in a Forge pipeline, this was controlled via Developer Studio, where the setting was controlled in the [appName].refinement_config.xml file. Dimension data type could be specified as 'Numeric' or 'Alpha', which would control the order in which dimension values were sorted. For example, here is an example of how dimension value sort order could vary depending on which setting was chosen:

The 11.1 Oracle Commerce Administration Guide describes how to control dimension and property settings in a CAS-based application via the index-config.json file, however no setting is available in the Configuration Import API for objects of type "endeca:dimension". For properties, "endeca:property", there is a "propertyDataType" property with values ALPHA, INTEGER, DOUBLE, GEOCODE, DATETIME, DURATION, and TIME available. There appear to be no equivalent settings for dimensions in the file.

How can dimension value sorting be controlled in a CAS-based application?
