CLOB to BLOB data type conversion (Doc ID 2204921.1)

Last updated on DECEMBER 23, 2020

Applies to:

Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing - Version and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

**Disclaimer:** This KM article may include the following abbreviations:

CCB - Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing
OUAF/FW - Oracle Utilities Framework
CLOB - Character large object
BLOB- Binary large object
PDF - Portable Document Format

A few customers are using columns, such as f1_attachment.attachment_data  to store data and documents for CC&B. The data type of the column is CLOB (text) and not a BLOB, and all binary files uploaded (mostly pdfs) are converted to Base 64 Strings and then stored as CLOBS. This conversion can create significant bloating, uploading 10 files which total 9.35Mb on the filesystem can consume 26Mb on the database.  The overhead for BOLBs is significantly smaller and would reduce the amount of space consumed on the database.  Is there a way to convert columns from CLOB to BLOB?
