Applying Patch 5.1.0.12 Fails With "Unable To Define Application Install Directory" (Doc ID 2228234.1)

Symptoms

When attempting to apply 5.1.0.12 the following error appears in the deployRDCapplication.log file:

java.io.IOException: [J2EE Deployment SPI:260080]Unable to define application install directory at 'D:\temp\olsardc.ear'. Directory could not be created or is a file.Failed to deploy the application with status failed
Current Status of your Deployment:
Deployment command type: deploy
Deployment State : failed
Deployment Message : java.io.IOException: [J2EE Deployment SPI:260080]Unable to define application install directory at 'D:\temp\olsardc.ear'. Directory could not be created or is a file.
No stack trace available.
