Autoreply Behavior If Vacationstart Or End Date Are Not Set? (Doc ID 2237129.1)

Goal

What is the autoreply behavior if vacationStartDate or vacationEndDate are not explicitly set?

We understand how to use vacationStartDate and vacationEndDate to control autoreplies but, what happens if one or the other of these attributes is missing?

Is autoreply never generated or, is beginning of time or end of time assumed for one attribute if the other is null?

Like if end date is December 01, 2017 but start date is not set, will autoreplies be sent from now until then or not at all?  And likewise if start date is in the past but no end date will we generate autoreplies forever or not at all?

The documentation is not exact on this, stating simply: "No start date is enforced if this attribute is missing." and "No end date is enforced if this attribute is missing"
That statement could be interpreted multiple ways.
