The Most Common Cause of Performance Issues, Hangs, and Freezes in Experience Manager and How to Avoid It

Information in this document applies to any platform.
Given enough time, most customers will encounter one or more of these common Workbench symptoms:
- Experience Manager content collections load very slowly. (Excluding scenarios involving tens of thousands of content items.)
- Workbench Tools load slowly, to the point of timing out or inaccessibility.
- The simplest of operations in Experience Manager leaves you waiting on the "loading" wheel until lunch time.
- The Endeca Tools Service CPU consumption is through the roof, and Experience Manager is essentially unusable.
Many times these symptoms are resolved, temporarily, via a restart of the Endeca Tools Service.
However, this is treating only the symptoms, and can have catastrophic consequences if the underlying issue is permitted to continue.
There have not been any out-of-the-ordinary changes.
This scenario can occur even if no significant changes may have been made to the application configuration since deployment.
