Inquiry in COBOL to Java Conversion of Base codes

User noticed that the converted base COBOL codes have Java classes created: one abstract parent class and a concrete class (suffixed with “_Impl”). user would like to ask what is the reasoning behind this. i.e. Why didn't user just have one associated Java class to the COBOL program?
