Symptoms

When attempting to configure the database connection for the P6 Professional application, the following error occurs.

Bad public user name or password. PRM DBAccess Error: Connection attempt to database failed with message SQL State: 1,
SQL Error Code: 18, Level: 16, Procedure: , Line: 0
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (SECDoClientHandshake()).]SSL Security error.;

 

The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:

  1. Launch (Windows Start) > Oracle - Primavera P6 > Database Configuration.
  2. On the Welcome screen click Next.
  3. Select the Modify an existing database alias option and click Next.
  4. For Driver Type select Microsoft SQL Server/SQL Express then click Next.
  5. On the Configure SQL Server Connection screen:
    1. In the Host Name field enter the name or IP address of the server where the SQL Server database is hosted; if using a Named Instance add a backslash and the instance name (ex: server\primavera).
    2. In the Database Name field enter the P6 database name.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter the Public Username (ex. pubuser) and Password and click Next, then Next again on the following screen.
  8. View the reported error.
