The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
Advanced Search

Changes

Workflow Status Equal TO $CURRENTSTATUS And
Approver Action Equal To Awaiting Approval And
Approver Contains Username (userid) And
Description of Change Does Not Contain TEST

Workflow Status Equal TO $CURRENTSTATUS And
Workflow Status Not Equal TO $STATUSTYPE CANCEL; And
Approver Action Equal To Awaiting Approval And
Approver Contains Username (userid) And
Desciption of Ch Does Not Contain TEST

Application Error
Workflow Status can only be used in a criteria group along with other workflow attributes.
