Mobile Sync Gateway is Not Returning SMTP Errors

Symptoms


Mobile Sync Gateway is not returning SMTP error information.

As a test, attempted to send an email though Mobile Sync Gateway to an invalid local address.  The mail is not sent and stays in the "Posta in uscita" mailbox (something similar to "Outbox"; not "Sent" or "Drafts" folder).
The client being used doesn't return the "5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias" error which the MTA server returns.
The test was performed with Outlook 2016 and both Android 4.4.2 and Android 6 native client.

If the user performs the test using Thunderbird or the Convergence mail client, the user receives the expected popup stating "unknown or illegal alias". Also, we can see that the mail server is logging the expected message:


Due to this issue, users do not see any error when an invalid address is specified.
