Error 'Status 505 - Field <field name> has invalid characters' When Attempting to Update an Existing User via CSV File Import or Web Service Call 'UpdateUser' (Doc ID 2431818.1)

When attempting to update an existing user via Web Service call or CSV integration, the following error occurs.

Error Status 505 - Field <field name> has invalid characters, for username: <user name>


The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:

  1. Create a user with special characters in the user name.
  2. Set the Title as N/A.
  3. Enter a Phone number.
  4. Save the new user's account information.
  5. Try updating the user through .CSV file integration or Web Service call UpdateUser.
  6. Note the reported error.
