NMS Viewer Freezes During Map Repaint With Error "ViewerCanvas: paintComponent failed" (Doc ID 2478942.1)

Symptoms

Viewer at times freezes, refusing to repaint the map, in that zooming, unloading, reloading, searching for other maps fails to change the displayed map.
The viewer status bar DOES update with the targeted device name, but without displaying the device.
