Convergence Times Out Trying To Contact Calendar Server

Symptoms
When user with calendar access clicks on the Convergence Calendar tab, nothing happens. After some time a message is shown informing that calendar server is not available.
Convergence iwc.log shows:
PROXY_CAL: ERROR from com.sun.comms.client.web.services.BaseProxyServlet Thread http-thread-pool-443(5) at 2019-04-15 12:42:18,653 - Error processing the request by the proxy servlet: Error while executing the service request : Calendar Service: Timeout waiting for connection from pool
Caldav section in the Convergence configuration shows:
caldav.host = calendar.example.com
