Characteristic values editing with custom "fill tool", similar to the calendar

Is It possible implement a button similar to the "calendar" icon of date fields, that opens a finding tool to feed a characteristic?
In an object creation/modify activities, user wants to select some attributes using finding tool. For example when create a new Card have the possibility to select the Vendor by search results, or when duplicate an existing shelf select the new Destination Location.
