Mboxutil -R Takes A Very Long Time To Complete (Doc ID 2592141.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 10, 2024

Applies to:

Oracle Communications Messaging Server - Version 8.0.2 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

We have an "mboxutil -R" command that has been running for over 23 hours now:

$ ps -ef|grep mboxutil
9122 9113 1 08:35:49 pts/24 363:18 mboxutil -R user/INBOX
15999 9253 0 07:39:18 pts/26 0:00 grep mboxutil

The reason for the restore:  a user received a huge flood of email from some automated system and wanted it all removed. Someone then wrote an expire rule file trying to select those messages by subject, but something about that expire rule was wrong and it removed all the email. The mboxutil -R was then started to restore the user's mail.

The default log shows when the deletion occurred and when the restore started:

There are not enough files in the account to explain why it has taken 23 hours if it is doing 3k stat() calls per second.
