Goal

Can column PURPOSE_CD data type be changed from NUMBER(5) to VARCHAR2(5) in instrument table?

Currently there is a column named 'PURPOSE_CD' available in few of the instrument tables (FSI_D_LOAN_CONTRACTS,FSI_D_MORTGAGES...). The column data type is 'NUMBER(5)'.
Going forward from the EDW (source) this column going to load with some alphabets as well. So that reason, planning to change this column data type as VARCHAR2(5) through the data modeler.
