Recommendation On Swapping For ECE (Doc ID 2675259.1)

Last updated on JUNE 10, 2020

Applies to:

Oracle Communications BRM - Elastic Charging Engine - Version 11.3.0.6.0 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

From Coherence's documentation (https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24290_01/coh.371/e22838/tune_perftune.htm#COHAG223), it is not advised for Coherence processes to swap, and if possible, to turn off swapping altogether.

However, the customer's O.S. team suggest that it is not advisable to turn off swapping completely on customer's servers, as it works as a small safety valve in case of RAM shortage, more so in the servers, the customer has to run custom processes for ECE operation.

What is advisable for ECE's proper operation regarding swapping? If turning off swapping is not an option, would lowering the value of swappiness be advisable? Please take into consideration that some servers have to run additional processes for the operation that are not part of ECE.

For clarification, the swappiness value is currently set to the OS' default, at 60.

Please advise if gradually lowering the swappiness value from 60 to (preferably) 0 in decrements of 5 and load testing would be a valid strategy.
