Regarding D1_INIT_MSRMT_DATA Partitioning

As per DBA Guide the partitioning strategy for D1_INIT_MSRMT_DATA table is as below when using ILM.

PARTITION BY RANGE (ILM_DT)
SUBPARTITION BY range (RETENTION_PERIOD)

The sub partitioning is based on RETENTION_PERIOD which is not the Primary Key .

What is the performance gain perspective of using RETENTION_PERIOD ? It would only help in retention and archiving isn't it ?
Where as using the Primary Key INIT_MSRMT_DATA_ID and having more sub partitions would help the thread pool worker scale up .
We would like to understand the performance gains with regards to using RETENTION_PERIOD as sub partitioning column.?

Please clarify this as we will have to go-live soon with this customer.
