LDAP Login Fails With 'Error while connecting to LDAP server' and javax.naming.directory.InvalidSearchFilterException (Doc ID 2820185.1)

Symptoms

On OFSAAI 8.1.1, users cannot login to OFSAA after LDAP integration.  They get the following error:

Error while connecting to LDAP server. Please contact your System Administrator

Additionally, the following error exists in the SMSService.log from $FIC_HOME/logs:
