Symptoms

Users report the Navbar in the application is missing. They also report an "Error 500--Internal Server Error" is displayed in the space where the Navbar is normally displayed - left hand side of the application. The rest of the application displayed correctly. While investigating the problem by attempting to connect/logon to the WebLogic Server Admin console, only the log in page (http://hostName:portNbr/console/login/LoginForm.jsp) could be accessed. The administrator could not actually log in to work with the WebLogic Server Admin console. A "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Metaspace" error was also observed in the ${SERVER_NAME}.mss.log file (see below).

ERROR

<[ServletContext@339767211[app:consoleapp module:console path:null spec-version:3.1]] Servlet failed with an Exception java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Metaspace

NOTE: The stop{SERVER_NAME}.sh script could not shut down the server process so the java <PID> processes had to be forcefully killed using the command line.
