Symptoms

Mass Changes (Responses):  Updated Records fail to Validate (status='VF') and the 'Validate Comment' field contains a 'special/escape Square' character ( [] ) i.e.

 

The responses which failed to validate / returned no meaningful 'Validate Comment' are Protected Repeating Defaults i.e. the DCM Question Group is set up as follows:
