Unable To Install Patch In Customized Environment (Doc ID 876688.1)

Goal

We stored all the files associated with 7.3.1 upgrade into source control and built our development  environments from source control. As a result we do not have a valid pinrev output or a valid vpd.properties file which are required for patches to install. How do we install patches without a valid vpd.properties file?  Note, we also have ThirdParty software configured.

As a work around we can install the patch in an 7.3.1 out-of-box instance and after installation we can move the relevant files associated with the patch into our customized environment and recompile. Is this a valid approach?
