Purpose

Automatic Progression of a Candidate to the Next Candidate Selection Workflow (CSW) Step.
Configuration > Recruiting - Administration > Candidate Selection Workflow

Do not confuse Step and Status concepts. A CSW is composed of Steps where each Step usually contains multiple Statuses.
Here the intent is to explain how a candidate can be moved from a Step to another one, not to move between Statuses located within a single Step.
