Picklists: Managing and Removing Duplicate Picklists

After navigating to Settings  > Database Setup > Manage Picklists, you notice that there are duplicate picklists, containing the same format and values. You want to clean this up by deleting the unused copies of the picklists. However, you also want to make sure that you are not affecting any other assets by deleting the picklist.
