Contact Fields: Possible to Change the Data Type of a Custom or Standard Contact Field in Eloqua?

We have a field in Eloqua that we need to change the Data Type from Text to Large Text due to the character limit on Text fields (What are the Character Limits for Text and Large Text Fields?) being insufficient for our purposes. The Data Type is greyed out and we cannot change the field to Large Text. Is this expected behaviour and if so, is there any way for us to bypass it?
