Convert Non-indexed custom field to Index Custom Text Field (Doc ID 1985942.1)

Created a Custom Object called Service Request having a custom field "Customer Ref#" initially created as a text field that held specific data.
Further this was referenced within Reporting but now user is chainging the process and want to create a Custom Hosted Application that will review the number and if the reference number is found it will create an Activity against this object.
Would like to know if this field can now be converted to an indexed field even if initially it was created as a normal field.
