Why are deleted accounts still visible on Opportunity records in the Account field? (Doc ID 2137807.1)

Goal

Why do Opportunity records still show the value of the Account they were associated to (information which is found on the Opportunity record's details page in Simplified User Interface in the Account field)
even after the Account record in question was deleted from the system?
