Error When Trying To Save, Preview, or Deploy Document in Document Designer [An Unknown Error has occurred]

Information in this document applies to any platform.
There are several symptoms for this issue that affect only large document in Document Designer:
- Attempting to save document results in a long loading gif animation and then an error is thrown - "An unknown error has occurred"
- Attempting to opening page XSL results in same behavior
- Attempting to preview Document results in same behavior
- Attempting to deploy the document results in same behavior
Document Designer log does not show anything out of ordinary.
