Sales Rep Not Able To Associate Opportunities To The Sales Custom Object

Created a Custom Object - named 'Project', which has an 1:M relationship to Opportunity. Customer has created a Subtab for Opportunity where he could associate / link multiple Opportunities to the Project record. They have a role level customization, which allows all the Sales Reps to view all the Opportunities, even though they are not in the team (or) Opty Owner.
1. Logged in as Sales Rep and navigated to 'Project' custom object -> Opportunity Subtab
2. Click on 'Add' and search for Opportunities
3. The sales rep is able to search for all the opportunities being the fact they have given access to view all the opportunities for all the sales reps
4. But when trying to 'Select' the opportunity to link it to the project record, they are allowed only for those where the sales rep is owner / sales team member of the opty, but for other records - 'Check box' is grayed out - the same can be viewed from the following screenshot - Click Here to Open
Why is Sales Rep not allowed to associate the Opportunity here in the step 4, even though they have read only access to opty. Also, is there way to accommodate this requirement?
