ADD CREATE OPTION WHEN SEARCHING IN CUSTOM OBJECT

Noticed that on some object sub-tabs the add button pops up a search window which does contain a Create button.
However, on some others this Create button isn't available.How we can add this Create button to all Search pop-ups.
1) Go to the Account object, drill into an account, go to the contacts subtab, click Add - you will see a create button there.
2) This is on a custom object with a subtab Contacts. There's an M:M relationship between custom object and Contacts. Drill into an account in the custom object, go to the contacts subtab, click Add - there is NO create button there.
There should be a create button on the custom object > contact tab after clicking Add.
