BDCS Cluster Verification Checks Raise Intermittent ntpdate "no server suitable for synchronization found" Warnings (Doc ID 2205657.1)

Last updated on JANUARY 13, 2020

Applies to:

Big Data Cloud Service - Version 1.0 and later
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

NOTE: In the examples that follow, user details, cluster names, hostnames, directory paths, filenames, etc. represent a fictitious sample (and are used to provide an illustrative example only). Any similarity to actual persons, or entities, living or dead, is purely coincidental and not intended in any manner.

Running the cluster verification tests in the BDCS environment either as part of an upgrade, with "./mammoth -c" or bdacheckcluster can intermittently but consistently raise ntpdate messages/warnings as below. Note, however, the cluster verifications still reported successful.

1. During the cluster verifications ntpdate intermittently raises messaging like below for various ntp servers:

19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[57327]: no server suitable for synchronization found
...
19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[68321]: no server suitable for synchronization found

Full output is like:

19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[57327]: <IP_ADDRESS_NTP_SERVER1> rate limit response from server.
19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[13621]: <IP_ADDRESS_NTP_SERVER3> rate limit response from server.
...
19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[52341]: no server suitable for synchronization found
...
19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[57433]: <IP_ADDRESS_NTP_SERVER2> rate limit response from server.
19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[13104]: <IP_ADDRESS_NTP_SERVER4> rate limit response from server.
19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[7100]: no server suitable for synchronization found
...
19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[56789]: no server suitable for synchronization found
19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[6788]: <IP_ADDRESS_NTP_SERVER3> rate limit response from server.
19 Nov 02:54:14 ntpdate[13232]: <IP_ADDRESS_NTP_SERVER4> rate limit response from server.

3. A warning is raised at the end of the cluster checks for the NTP server which is inaccessible:

WARNING: NTP server is not running on host <NTP_SERVER_FQDN> when checked from <BDCS_HOSTNAME1>
WARNING: NTP server is not running on host <NTP_SERVER_FQDN> when checked from <BDCS_HOSTNAMEn>
