Extensibility: Contact Phone not retrieved when saving twice

Customer has an issue with a Global Function that is called during a Before Update trigger on Contact.
The first time customer is clicking on Save, the function works properly, but if they click a second time on Save, then the phone numbers on the Contact cannot be retrieved.
