Work Phone Number format with Eloqua integration (Doc ID 2237150.1)

Why does the format for work phone number for contacts change when you add phone extension?

For example:
When Eloqua sends a Contact to Oracle Sales Cloud, with a work phone value of +1 xxx xxx-4444, the number is parsed correctly into country code, area code, phone number fields. However, when Eloqua sends a number with an extension, e.g. +1 xxx xxx-4444 x34, then the country code is correctly parsed into the country code field, but all of the rest of the number gets placed into the phone number field. It appears as "xxxxxx4444x34" all in the one phone number field.
