Terminated Employee Manager Details Are Missing For WF Approval Escalation

Are running into WF approval issues where if a manager "XXXX" is terminated - the termination removes John's manager/supervisor record from his record.
If John had a number of approvals waiting in his BPM workflist - they would sit until 5-7 days when the WF timeout/escalation kicks in.
Then it would escalate the approval to Johns next manager up in the hierarchy. Since XXXX was termed and has no manager assigned to him - the approval doesn't know how to escalate and gets sent to WF error.
This seems kind of clunky and needs manual escalation to fix this issue.
Is there any enhancement requests to keep the manager association with the terminated employee?
