Cannot Create A DCL Field For A M:M Relation

Customer has a requirement of having a M:M relation from Account to a custom object.
Customer has manually created a relationship between the two in Application Composer.
Customer has also created a DCL field on the custom object page that is associated to Accounts.
The DCL doesn't populate the Account associate at the Custom object field.
Is this an expected behavior?
