How To Update Product Type Variant Enumerated Fields (Doc ID 2292356.1)

Goal

Try to update a variant list property of a sku item using /ccadmin/v1/skus. An error is thrown:

Try to perform the change to the SKU in the admin console and there are errors. Use the REST call /ccadmin/v1/productVariants to update that enumerated list, but that fails too. The update also fails with error 20190 which is not listed on the possible errors for the API. I How can you add one value to a list if you can't determine what the existing values are?
