How to make fields available in Self Service

I have attempted to follow the instructions in Doc ID 454408.1 but this is out of date for R12. I have attached a doc with screenshots and some additional questions. I am unsure where I should be attempting the customize pages task. in the Manage Person page (the admin page), in Employee Self Service, My Details. Or after I click Edit Biographical Information in that Self Service page. Nothing I try seems to work. In the Oracle it talks about opening Expression Builder at various points and setting the expression to = True. But this is already set to True in everything I have looked at (but this might be the method pre-R12). I am seeking some guidance please
