User unable to edit Contact

Customer recently applied Contact security settings to a custom role and assigned it to all users. The intention was to give users access to view and edit only Contacts associated with their owned Accounts, or Contacts created by them.
Customer has a complaint from a user who cannot edit a Contact associated with an Account that he owns.

Contact should be editable

The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
1. Login in to Sales Cloud
2. Navigate to Contacts -> Drilldown-> Contact
3. Contact is read only mode

The issue has the following business impact:
